What Are Subluxations?

If you have been to a chiropractor, you have probably heard the term ‘subluxation’. Well, what exactly is a subluxation? In simplest terms, a subluxation (a.k.a. Vertebral Subluxation) is when one or more of the vertebrae in your spine move out of alignment and create pressure on the nerves. Why does this matter to you? The pressure on the spinal nerves causes them to malfunction and send mixed up signals throughout your body. These interruptions basically mean that part of your body is not functioning at 100%. Your body’s innate ability to heal itself is compromised.

What causes subluxations?

You might think that subluxations are only caused by physical trauma. However, there are many different influences in our lives that can cause spinal subluxations. Subluxations are caused by the “Three T’s:  Trauma, Toxins, and Thoughts.

  1. Trauma – Physical
    1. Car Accidents
    2. Falls
    3. Behaviors/Habits
  2. Toxins – Chemical
    1. Environment
    2. Food
    3. Drink
  3. Thoughts – Emotional
    1. Stress

First, trauma is the most well-known cause of subluxations and the easiest to understand. While most people only think of big things such as car accidents and falls causing trauma, the truth is there are many small things that cause trauma to our body every day. These behaviors or habits could be something like carrying a heavy backpack or purse, slouching at your desk, continually looking down at your phone or computer, wearing high heels, sleeping on your stomach, continually lifting with improper form, etc. Each of these actions have the potential to cause subluxations.

Second, toxins, as a cause of subluxations, is not as obvious and therefore is harder to comprehend. Your body is an amazing machine and when healthy and chemically balanced, all is well. However, we are bombarded by toxins every day that disrupt the chemical balance of the body and cause subluxations. Toxins can get into the body by the food we eat (think processed foods and GMOs), the air we breathe (indoor and outdoor pollution), and even from the water we are drinking (plastic bottles, unfiltered water).

Last but not least, thoughts are the number one cause of subluxations. Stress is one of the major contributors and nearly one quarter of our population says they feel stress in their lives. When you are stressed, the muscles in your upper back and neck become tight. This tension can cause subluxations.
